What Do Men Really Want?
Beauty, grace, exotic good looks, youth. What is it that can turn a man's fancy? It's a question that has bedeviled the species for thousands of years. The female half of humankind spends untold billions of dollars each year on clothes, shoes, cosmetics, hair spray and perfumes. All in pursuit of idealized beauty. And while some self-esteem gurus might argue that it is done to make oneself feel good, others might be willing to admit that it is done in large part to attract men.

Tranquil Personality May Reduce Dementia Risk
People with a peaceful personality who are also socially active may be somewhat protected against dementia as they age, whether they are extroverted or introverted, a recent study discovered. The investigation, which was conducted in Sweden and reported in the journal Neurology, measured and compared three traits in a group of 506 elderly people with an average age of 83. The three traits were extroversion (openness in talking to others), neuroticism (the level of distress, negativity and nervousness in one’s life) and social activity (the extent of interaction with others). Why Women Live Longer
Across the globe, women still live 5 to 10 years longer than men. Founder of the New England Centenarian Study at Boston University explains why 85% of people over 100 years old are women. One large reason is the large advantage women have over men in terms of cardiovascular disease. Women develop symptoms like heart attacks and strokes usually in their 70s and 80s, compared to men who develop them in their 50s and 60s. Doctors long believed the difference was due to estrogen, but studies show that this may not be the case. Read more about Why Women Live Longer

The Paradoxical Vulnerability of Men
Dr. Marriane Legato discusses what she believes to be one of the most interesting issues concerning men. At any age, from birth to 85 years, men die at a greater number than women. Their vulnerability in the womb is very interesting. About 250 male fetuses are conceived for every 100 females fetuses and, yet, the birthing average is a one to one ratio. So why are those male fetuses dying at a greater number in the womb? Why are they less developed than girls at birth? They're about six weeks behind their sisters when they're born. And if they're premature and have a low birth weight, they're much more likely to die than girls. Read more about The Paradoxical Vulnerability of Men

Men's Death Rates Cut Drastically Through Daily Exercise
Increasing exercise capacity reduces the risk of death in African-American and Caucasian men, according to research on the link between fitness and mortality, including over 15,000 participants. Reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association, the researchers investigated exercise capacity as an independent predictor of overall mortality for African-American men (6,749) and Caucasion men (8,911) in addition to analyzing whether racial differences in exercise capacity influenced the risk of death. Each participant was tested by a standardized treadmill test to assess exercise capacity. They were encouraged to exercise until they were fatigued or unless symptoms of cardiac ischemia developed. These individuals were then tracked for an average of 7.5 years. Read more about Men's Death Rates Cut Drastically Through Daily Exercise

Know if you are at Risk for Heart Disease
Want to know whether you're at risk for heart disease? Pull out a tape measure. A recent study published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology suggests that body mass index (BMI) alone may not be reliably linked to cardiovascular disease risk. Researchers say the best indicator for health and heart disease risk is the waist to hip ratio, which means if you're a apple shaped person and tend to carry weight around the middle you may need to cut back inches, even if your BMI is in the healthy range.
