Seven Anxiety-Fighting Foods
Step aside, Prozac and Valium, and make way for some natural alternatives that, while they might not do as dramatic a job at relieving anxiety, certainly have the anxiety-relieving benefit that they have no nasty side effects whatever. Berries. Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, cherries - any berries at all are loaded with vitamin C and other beneficial plant chemicals that counteract the human stress hormone cortisol. And the carbohydrates they contain are the good, complex kind. The body breaks them down into sugar slowly, so you don't experience a blood-sugar crash.

Japanese Kampo Medicine
The American public is becoming more accepting of innovative forms of medical treatment. Today most Western educated physicians accept acupuncture and Chinese medicine as a valid and alternative form of treatment for many medical issues, often supplementing standard medical practices and in some cases even supplanting it. However, there are many other indigenous medical traditions that have centuries of effective use. One such tradition is Japanese Kampo medicine.

A Cancer Therapy Nearing Breakthrough
An approach to treating cancer known as monoclonal antibody therapy, that has already effectively proven itself, is on the threshold of becoming yet more powerful, according to an overview of recent research.
“We believe that antibody therapy has the capacity to immunize people against cancer,” said Louis Weiner, director of the Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center at Georgetown University Medical Center. “Treatment modifications might be able to prolong, amplify and shape a continuous immune response to cancer cells.”

Doctor Stirs Furor Over "Cure" for Alcoholism
An alcoholism-conquering testimonial by a French cardiologist is helping an obscure muscle relaxant become a lightning rod in the global medical community.
Olivier Ameisen, one of the top heart specialists in France and an associate professor of medicine at Cornell University’s Weill Cornell Medical College, wrote a book that’s now being published in the United States called The End of My Addiction, in which he details how he overcame his dependence on alcohol by self-administering the spasticity drug baclofen (Kemstro or Lioresal).

Omega Fatty Acids on a Global Roll
A health craze over omega fatty acids is fueling a soaring global market for foods and drinks fortified with the biochemicals. The "healthy halo" around the compounds has been created by widespread public awareness of them, their scientifically proven health advantages, consumers' readiness to buy products enhanced with them, and a flood of positive media coverage.
Market research publisher Packaged Facts estimates that the global market expanded 36 percent between 2007 and 2008.

The Medicine Called Sleep
Deep, adequate sleep is like a healing medicine to the body. But the opposite is true, too. In fact, consistently poor or insufficient sleep can contribute to diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular problems and weight gain, according to experts at the Cleveland Clinic. Blood pressure, for example, rises and falls during sleep. But when sleep is interrupted, there can be an unhealthy impact on the blood pressure's normal variability, causing it to rise and setting off problems with the heart and arteries.

St. John's Wort and Depression
Some studies show St. Johns wort helps alleviate depression, and some don't. But one government agency, one educational institution and a nonprofit biomedical group recently gave it a something of a thumbs-up. "There is some scientific evidence that St. John's wort is useful for treating mild to moderate depression," according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). And the University of Maryland Medical Center says that, "in numerous studies, St. John's wort has been effective in reducing depressive symptoms in those with mild to moderate but not severe [or major] depression."
